Womens Health and Pregnancy Related Pain

A women’s health initial assessment will last approximately 1 hour and consist of a comprehensive assessment and explanation of pelvic anatomy. Together we will identify the cause of your symptoms and decide on the most effective form of treatment.

Incontinence

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is ‘the involuntary leakage on effort or exertion, or on sneezing or coughing’. (ICS 2002)

About 1:3 women suffer from SUI at some point in their lives. It can happen at any age, but is more common in women between the ages of 35 and 60.

Urge incontinence is the ‘involuntary leakage accompanied by or immediately preceded by, urgency, that is, a sudden compelling desire to pass urine, which is difficult to defer.’ (ICS 2002)

People with urgency also need to pass urine more often than normal (more than 8 times in 24 hours) and this is known as ‘frequency’. This may also involve waking more than once in the night to empty the bladder ‘nocturia’.

Genital prolapse is the descent of one or more of the pelvic organs into the vagina. This is due to their supportive structures becoming weakened. A common complaint of this condition is the ‘feeling of something coming down’.

Pregnancy related Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)

PGP is pain within the pelvis and lower back during pregnancy; which may continue post-natally. This can cause difficulty with activities such as:

PGP may be caused by one or a combination of factors:

uneven movement of the pelvic joints

Early assessment of this problem results in better management.
